How to use the moxibustion device? A beginner

时间:2026-01-26     【转载】

As a modern extension of traditional Chinese external treatment methods, the moxibustion device has been enhanced through technological innovations such as precise temperature control and intelligent operation, making traditional moxibustion safer and more convenient to use. However, for beginners, there are still many questions regarding how to use the moxibustion device correctly. This article provides a systematic introduction guide for beginners from three aspects: equipment classification, operation steps, and precautions.

I. Common Types and Applicable Scenarios of Acupoint Therapy Devices

1. Electronic Temperature-Controlled Type

This type uses semiconductor heating elements or infrared rays to simulate the heat effect of moxibustion. The temperature range is typically between 40°C and 60°C. Suitable for: People who are sensitive to moxa smoke, office workers seeking convenient operation, and patients with chronic diseases requiring long-term treatment.

2. Open Flame Moxibustion Type

It uses traditional moxa sticks/tubers to burn, combined with anti-scald moxibustion devices to achieve heat conduction. Suitable for: Those who seek the "warming and unblocking meridians" effect of traditional moxibustion, people with cold-damp constitution.

3. Smoke-free Purification Type

Eliminates smoke through catalytic decomposition or physical adsorption technology, while retaining the active ingredients of the medicine. Suitable for: individuals with respiratory sensitivity, users in confined spaces (such as bedrooms, offices).

II. Four-step Guide for New Users

Step 1: Equipment Preparation and Inspection

Electronic type: Check if the power cord is in good condition, if the temperature control display is functioning properly, and if the heating head is securely connected to the main unit.

Flame-type: Confirm that the mugwort stick/mugwort rope is not damp or moldy, that the heat protection cover of the heating device is properly installed, and that the fire extinguishing cover is within easy reach.

Smoke-free type: Turn on the purification function 10 minutes in advance and observe if there are any abnormal noises or odors coming from the exhaust port.

Step 2: Acupoint Positioning and Posture Adjustment

Basic Acupoints: Beginners can start with the "Four Major Health Care Points" - Zusanli (3 inches below the outer knee), Guanyuan (3 inches below the navel), Shenshu (the navel), and Mingmen (the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra).

Posture Principle: Keep the area to be treated flat and relaxed. For example, whening the back, use the prone position; when灸ing the abdomen, use the supine position.

Auxiliary Tools: Use acupoint positioning stickers or human model diagrams to assist in positioning, to avoid affecting the therapeutic effect due to deviation of the acupoints.

Step 3: Parameter Settings and Activation

Electronic type: First, set the low-temperature (40℃) adaptation mode, then gradually increase the temperature to the comfortable level; the recommended duration is 15-20 minutes per time.

Open flame type: After lighting the incense stick, gently blow it until it becomes bright red. Place the (a type of heating device used for traditional Chinese medicine therapy) 2-3 cm above the acupoint, and stop when the skin feels warm without burning pain.

Smokeless type: Adjust the purification level according to the size of the environment. For small spaces (such as bedrooms), use the medium level; for large spaces (such as living rooms), use the high level.

Step 4: Completion of Cleaning and Storage

Electronic type: First, turn off the power of the device. After the heating head cools down, wipe it with a dry cloth. Avoid washing with water.

Flame-type: Completely cover the mugwort stick with the fire-extinguishing cover. Confirm there is no flame before storing. Pour the remaining mugwort ash into a metal container.

Smoke-free type: Clean the filter screen (once a month). Use a soft-bristled brush to remove the absorbed mugwort ash and keep the exhaust port unobstructed.

III. Three Must-Know Points for Beginners

Temperature Control

When using for the first time, start with 40℃ for moxibustion. The skin should show uniform redness without any stinging sensation for the best result. If you feel too hot, immediately stop and reduce the temperature to avoid cold burns (skin damage can occur if it remains exposed to temperatures above 44℃ for 6 hours).

Time management

Each session of moxibustion should not exceed 30 minutes, and the total daily duration should not exceed 90 minutes. The same acupuncture point should not be treated consecutively for more than 7 days. A 2-3 day interval is required before continuing to prevent excessive skin irritation.

It is not advisable to perform moxibustion on an empty stomach, after a heavy meal, when drunk, or when extremely fatigued.

Do not apply moxibustion to areas with broken skin, infections, or ulcers.

Avoid using moxibustion on the waist and abdomen of pregnant women, or on the unclosed fontanelles of children.

People with implanted pacemakers should stay away from electronic moxibustion devices.

Conclusion

The intelligent design of the moxibustion device has significantly lowered the operational threshold, but the core principle of "treating according to syndrome" still needs to be followed. It is recommended that beginners determine the adjustment direction through TCM constitution identification before using it. For example, for individuals with qi deficiency constitution, the Qi Hai acupoint should be emphasized for moxibustion, while for those with phlegm-dampness constitution, the Feng Long acupoint should be given priority. Adhering to the principle of "gradual progress and moderate quantity" allows traditional moxibustion wisdom and modern technology to jointly safeguard health.
